Target Audience Survey

In this post I will talk about my target audience and a survey I did at the beginning of this project to try and get a more detailed look at who my target audience is specifically. Getting their feedback was important before the pre-production stage as it meant that I could alter my original ideas to help look at what I could specifically include in my documentary in order to educate my target audience about my topic of choice (which is activism and how it now has begun to take place online/how the approach to activism has changed over the past decade.)

By finding out more specifc factors about my target audience such as specific demographics (age, gender) and some psychographics (their interests and what they spend their time doing) this has effecitvely helped my narrow down my idea to what I specifically want to do as the topics that the audience are already aware of will have appear less in my documentary than the issues my audience have claimed they know little/nothing about.

We were initially given the age group of 16-24 however given the fact that I have chosen a more serious topic I feel like my documentary will appeal to the older side of that age range rather than the younger. I like that I will be making a product with an older age range in mind as my previous products were all aimed at an audience of teenagers rather than young adults.

I had asked the two questions above so I could get a clear view on what the demographics of my audience were as once I knew the specifics of my audience I could then start to mould my finalized idea around the target audience and what would appeal to them such as looking into which fonts people between the ages of sixteen and eighteen enjoy looking at so when they're reading information that comes up on my documentary the font would catch their attention and keep them focused on my documentary. Seeing as my audience were pretty split between male and female I feel I will not have to look into specific topics that appeal to one gender or another but can make my topic with the though in mind that the topics included are there for a gender neutral audience.

Forms response chart. Question title: Do you use Social Media Daily?. Number of responses: 10 responses.

The three questions above were asked so I could get a look at the psychographics of my audience that specifically linked with the topic of my documentary in one way or another. I had asked about the target audience's social media usage as my topic focuses on activism taking place online so by finding out how much time they spend on social media and how they fill that time it means I get a clearer idea of who I'm making my documentary for. If the majority of the people doing the survey only used social media for entertainment (like three of people above stated) then I would have made my documentary less information based and more lighthearted however seeing as quite a few people use social media to keep themselves up to date with world events, communicate and educate themselves it means that if I take a more serious approach that too would appeal to my audience which is good as that is what I plan on doing. From this I now know my audience uses social media for an average of four and a half hours a day and I also know how they spend this time.

Forms response chart. Question title: Are you aware of what #HeforShe is?. Number of responses: 10 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: Are you aware of what #BlackLivesMatter is?. Number of responses: 10 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: Do you realize how big an effect social media has on activism?. Number of responses: 10 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: Are you aware that different ages groups have different views towards activism?. Number of responses: 10 responses.

The final questions I asked were in relation to my topic in general as all of the questions above related to something or another that I wanted to include as a subject in my documentary ranging from different activism movements that have happened in the past ten years all the way to how the past generations approached activism and the views they held on activism as whole. I found from this survey that a lot of my audience werent all that educated on some really important movements such as the #StopFundingHate movement as well as the #HeForShe movement which both focused on really imporant issues in society so due to this I will include more about these two movements rather than just focusing on the #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo movements (However I will still touch on these subjects as they show just how much of an effect social media can have when it comes to aiding activism movements)
